Recently I discovered dishwasher safe Mod Podge. I decided to put it to the test by making a placemat for Pearl that I can easily wash off. She is always making a huge mess and a washable placemat is a must! The fun part about this project is that you can totally customize it. So, you could use pages from an old children’s book, a piece of artwork that your child made, comics from the newspaper…anything! These DIY placemats are a blast to make!
Here’s what you will need: -Dishwasher safe Mod Podge -Foam Brush -Vinyl Placemat (I found mine at the dollar store) -Maps (or book pages, wrapping paper, whatever you are using!)
I had to use several maps to completely cover the placemat, so first I laid them all out and cut them to cover the vinyl placemat.
Brush a layer of the mod podge on the placemat, lay your paper on top and then brush on another layer. Allow it to dry then add another layer on top. Repeat this process until you have added 3-4 layers. Smooth out any wrinkles as you go. It won’t be perfect, but that’s ok! Let it dry and cure for a few days before using. Just a note: These DIY placemats are waterproof, but not indestructible. You can stick them in the dishwasher but they will curl up. You will have to weigh them down with something while they dry. A better bet would be to just wipe them down with a damp cloth after use.
Have fun customizing your own placemat!! If you liked this post, you might want to check out these:
