I have just recently joined the washi tape train. I know, I know, it’s been around for awhile but for some reason I didn’t bother with it until lately. When I found The Ribbon Retreat’s great selection of washi tape, I just knew I had to come up with a quick and easy Thanksgiving Project. I made this little Thankful Tree and it turned out so cute! It’s such a fun Thanksgiving centerpiece too. Stay tuned at the end of the post for more Thanksgiving decor ideas from Target’s “My Kind of Holiday” campaign!
If you aren’t familiar with a Thankful Tree, basically you have little slips of paper that you and/or your kids write different things you are thankful for each day in November. On Thanksgiving day, you can read each thing that was written down throughout the month. Such a fun visual reminder for kids (and adults!) to be thankful for the things we’ve been blessed with.
Here’s what you will need:
-A variety of washi tape
-A tin can
– Baker’s twine
-A small branch
Basically, I just took the washi tape and covered the tin can. Then, I stuck in a branch. I chose a white one that had already been painted, but a natural one would be great as well. I filled the can with beans and stuck the branch in. It holds nicely, but if yours doesn’t, you can always stick a piece of floral foam inside and stick the branch in that.
Next, I cut some carstock into small rectangles and added some washi tape to those. I punched a hole and used baker’s twine to tie them into the branches.
When I asked my 3 year old what she wanted to write on her paper, she said she was thankful for Ruby (our dog).
You can wait to hang each one until they are filled out, or you can hang them all and then take each one down and write on them and hang them back up. I think they look pretty cute just hanging like little ornaments. It would also be fun to cut them in leaf shapes instead of rectangles.
I hope you consider making a thankful tree this year to start a new Thanksgiving tradition. There is always something to be thankful for!
These trees make such a cute centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table! I’m also loving these other pieces from Target right now to add to holiday decor (click on the images to take you to the link):
