It’s no secret that I love purchasing things second hand. I’ve written many posts on thrifting tips. However, I also love to sell items to earn a little extra money. My favorite way to sell items is through Facebook marketplace. I have learned that certain things do better on Marketplace than others, so I’ve compiled a list of the absolute best things to sell on Facebook Marketplace.
The best things to sell on Facebook Marketplace include furniture, toys, clothing lots and tools. If you do a little research before selling items on Facebook Marketplace, you will have more success and be able to earn some extra cash.
The Best Things To Sell On Facebook Marketplace
I have purchased and sold a lot of things through Facebook Marketplace. In fact, when I need something for our home, Facebook Marketplace is the first place I go to. Alternatively, when we are organizing or purging, I tend to list as much as I can on Facebook Marketplace to earn a little extra money. Most people tend to only think of large furniture items to sell on Marketplace, but you would be surprised at just how much you can sell on Facebook Marketplace!
Small Furniture Pieces
Smaller furniture pieces such as stools, chairs, end tables and shelves do great on Facebook Marketplace because they are easy to transport. Most people can easily fit these items in their car, so they tend to go quickly if priced right.
Outdoor Furniture
I have sold a number of outdoor furniture piece on Marketplace and they have done surprisingly well. Even inexpensive plastic outdoor chairs will sell on Facebook Marketplace as long as they are priced low enough. Outdoor furniture is an area where most people don’t mind purchasing second hand because they tend to not be as picky about color and style.
Large Furniture Items
Even though small furniture items do well on Marketplace, don’t let that stop you from selling your large items such as couches, credenzas and hutches also. In fact, these items are usually ones that will go quickly once they are listed. Large furniture items are a category that most people tend to think of first when they consider buying something through Facebook Marketplace. Just make sure you research ahead of time how you should price your items and take good photos too.
Kids Clothing Lots
I have tried selling individual kids clothing pieces on Marketplace without much luck. However, kids clothing lots tend to do really well. A clothing lot just means a group of clothing, typically all in the same size. If someone is going to make the trip to drive to someone’s house to buy clothing, it’s a better use of their time to get a whole bag of clothes in the size that they need. This is a great way to earn a little extra cash when you child grows out of their current size. You can group their clothing in lots of about 20 pieces or so to sell them!
Seasonal Home Decor
In my experience, seasonal home decor tends to do better than general home decor on Marketplace. This might be because people are looking for specific items during the holidays. Make sure you get your seasonal decor listed early enough in the season (but not too early) in order to get them sold quickly.
High End Name Brand Clothing
Some adult sized clothing won’t do too well on Facebook Marketplace, so I would suggest trying Poshmark instead. However, if you have some clothing that is from a higher end brand, you are more likely to have success. I have sold items from Patagonia, Anthropologie and J.Crew on Marketplace. However, I have switched selling all my clothing over to Poshmark because I do think that you can earn better money through that app.
Tools
When you are cleaning out your garage and listing items on Marketplace, don’t forget about the tools! Larger power tools will do better than smaller items. If you do have a variety of small tools, try selling them together as a lot to draw in more people that would be willing to make the drive over to purchase your tools.
Building Materials
When we are doing DIY projects, we will often have leftover materials such as drywall, carpet remnants, studs and wood. These are all items that you can sell on Marketplace instead of trashing them. If people are willing to do a DIY project, then they are probably wanting to save money however they can and buying materials through Marketplace is a win-win situation for everyone involved!
Light Fixtures
For whatever reason, I have had a lot of success selling light fixtures through Marketplace. Whenever we are switching out a fixture, I will take a quick picture while it’s still up as well as another one after we have taken it down. Every time I have listed an old light fixture, it has sold fairly quickly. This is another area where people’s first instinct might be to trash it, but you are missing out on a little extra money in your pocket!
Cars
We have sold cars, yes – actual vehicles on Facebook Marketplace! This one takes a little more research and patience, but it can be done! We have successfully sold a mini van and a small SUV on Marketplace. This is such an excellent option when selling a used car because you will make a larger profit than trading a vehicle in to to a car dealership. You will need to research the price and get all of the necessary paperwork in order first. Also, have a plan with how potential buyers can test drive your vehicle and be willing to negotiate on the price.
Toys
When my kids’ birthdays roll around. I love checking Facebook Marketplace for birthday gifts. You can score some great deals for a fraction of the price and kids won’t care (or even know) if their toys are used. With that being said, you can also sell your kids old toys on Marketplace to earn some money. Selling toys is a great way for kids to earn some extra cash. They can take the photos and help research how much to sell their old toys for. Don’t sell something broken or in poor condition. But, gently used toys can do really well on Marketplace, especially if you coordinate a porch pickup option for the buyer!
Baby Gear
We have sold almost all of our old baby gear such as strollers, exersaucers and pack ‘n plays on Facebook Marketplace. Many thrift stores will no longer accept baby gear donations, so baby items tend to be hot sellers on Marketplace. It goes without saying, but you shouldn’t sell old carseats or items that have been recalled Facebook. Do a little research first before you list something just to make sure your item is still considered safe.
Rugs
If you have a rug in good condition or better yet – a vintage rug, then it will do surprisingly well on Facebook Marketplace! I have personally sold and purchased multiple rugs through Facebook with great success.
In Conclusion
If you need to earn some quick cash, try looking through your home to see if you there is anything on this list that you can sell on Facebook Marketplace! You will be surprised a just how much you can sell if you do the research first to price it appropriately and take quality photos. Good luck!
