It seems like quotes are everywhere. Pillows, printables, paintings…you name it. I’m loving the simple, black, block letter quote banners that are popping up in online stores. I thought I would try making my own! If you want to learn how to make a hanging banner with a quote, but you don’t have much crafty experience, then this is the tutorial for you!
It is so quick and easy to make a hanging banner with a quote. The best part is that you don’t need any fancy equipment or printers. All you need is an old sheet or fabric that you already have on hand, some fabric paint and a handful of other supplies to create a custom fabric quote banner.
How To Make A Hanging Banner With A Quote
Here is just one of these adorable quote banners trending on Pinterest and home decor blogs that I used for inspiration. I decided to make one for my daughter’s room, so I needed an appropriate quote and chose “you are my sunshine”.
I decided to whip up this banner with an old sheet that I already had on hand. It ended up being so easy!
When I happened across a random cream colored sheet that was in my garage sale pile, it gave me the idea to use it to make a banner of my own! The best part is that I knew I could customize it to say anything I wanted. It was so easy (and cheap) to make that I’m already thinking of where I can hang another one in my home!

Directions For How To Make A Fabric Hanging Banner With A Quote
Step One: Cut the fabric into the desired shape of your banner.
Make it slightly bigger than what you want the finished product to be to allow for seams. If you use a sheet, you can use the hemmed edge for the corner of your banner, saving you some sewing time!
Step Two: If using knit fabric, it may be helpful to zig zag the edges before sewing.
Step Three: Turn under the edges of the banner and iron. Stitch down about 1/4 inch from the edge.
Turn the top edge under one more time, leaving a casing to fit the dowel rod through.
Step Four: Print out the quote you want to display on your banner.
Tape this down onto the matte side of a piece of freezer paper. (make sure the shiny side of the freezer paper is facing DOWN).
Step Five: Using a craft knife, cut out the letters.
If you have a silhouette or cricket, I’m sure these machines would make this step easier. But, I am behind the times, so I just used the old fashioned craft knife.
Step Six: Remove the top piece of paper and iron down the freezer paper onto your fabric banner.
Step Seven: Using fabric paint and a sponge brush, paint inside your quote stencil.
Once it is dry, peel off the freezer paper to reveal your handmade quote! I am impatient, so I use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
Step Eight: Tie string or twine around the dowel rod to hang.
These would make great gifts as well. You could do funny saying, inside joke or movie quote. The options are endless! You could also experiment with different colors and fabrics.
