I had this idea randomly the other day and just had to go for it. It didn’t turn out exactly how I expected, but I’m sharing it anyways! I was cleaning out my girls’ room and they were playing with a random trick or treating plastic jack o’lantern. I was about to throw it away when I had a light bulb moment. I decided to try to use it as a mold to make a concrete pumpkin planter! He looks like his head got a little chopped off, but I’m still going with it. Here’s how I did it!
Grab yourself a plastic jack o’lantern that has lines and a face that are indented into the plastic. This is important so that the details show up on the finished planter! You also need an old plastic cup.
Fill the pumpkin up with quickcrete and water and mix. It takes a lot of concrete. So, just be prepared.
Push your plastic cup down into the concrete and weight it down with something. I used a heavy chain. Let it dry for a few days and then cut away the pumpkin and cup with a utility knife.
Stick a potted plant into the hole and you are done! Things I would change: I would fill it up with more concrete and make the hole larger by using a wider cup. Otherwise, I think it gets the job done!
I have been searching for other fall shaped plastic things to make more of these but haven’t had much luck yet. Let me know if you find something festive and make a planter out of it!
