If you are needing some DIY art for a nursery or child’s bedroom, consider making these mini animal canvases. I whipped them up in no time with plastic toys from the dollar store! Add in some bright colors of acrylic paint and you have some custom art for any child’s room, boy or girl. This is one of my favorite DIYs to date!
For this project you will need:
- Mini Canvases (5X5)
- Plastic Animals (I got mine at the Dollar Tree)
- Super Glue
- Mod Podge
- Acrylic Paint
Begin by cutting your animals in half. To cut them in half, I used a heat knife. This worked really well, but I know not everyone owns one of these. I can be done with a sharp utility knife but it may take a little more elbow grease!
I also painted a coat of while primer on the animals to make sure that the acrylic paint stuck really well.
Once the primer is dry, paint your animals and canvases with acrylic paint. My animals all required about 3 coats and the canvases needed about 2 coats. To make it go faster, use a hair dryer in between coats to cut down on drying time!
Once everything is dry, use a small bead of super glue to attach the animals to the center of the canvases.
Add a coat of glossy Mod Podge to give everything a nice finish. I think this step really took it to the next level and finished it off well.
I’m also glad that I painted the edges different colors. It just adds a little something extra.
I think it would be fun to add more to make this collage bigger. I kept all the bottoms of the animals, so I may have to incorporate those as well. Wouldn’t that be funny? Pearl loves looking up at these and naming them before she goes to bed.
