If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that we are in the process of totally making over our basement room into my 2 oldest daughters’ shared bedroom. I’m thrilled to say that it’s nearly complete and I can’t wait to share the full reveal with you soon! I wanted to make a woven wall hanging for an awkward spot by their bed and decided to try my hand at making a woven wall hanging. My secret to this one: old T-shirts! Yep, I just cut up a bunch of tees and made a loom and went for it. I think the end product is pretty cute, so read on to see how to make some of your own DIY wall decor for that spot in your home that’s feeling a little empty.
How to make a woven wall hanging? First, create a loom out of an old picture frame. Next, cut up an old t-shirt into 2 inch strips. Tie the strips together and weave it in and out of the loom. Cut the weaving off the loom and attach it to a branch. Hang it on the wall.

How To Make A Woven Wall Hanging Out Of T-Shirts
Woven wall hangings are all the rage right now but they can be quite pricey. The good news is that you can make one yourself for just a few bucks by using old t-shirts!
This is an excellent craft to do with kids to make a weaving to display in their room. You can customize the colors to fit the color scheme of the room. You can also make the woven wall hanging as big or small as you want.
This would be a fun craft to do at a kid’s birthday party. You could have the shirts cut up ahead of time and the the kids make mini ones to take home. You could also turn this craft into tiny coasters or potholders!
Materials Needed for DIY Woven Wall Hanging
Here’s what you will need:
- T-shirts
- Yarn
- Thumbtacks
- Picture Frame
- Sewing Machine
Instructions For How To Make A Woven Wall Hanging
1. Grab an old picture frame and marked off every 2 inches on the top and bottom.
2. Place thumbtacks at each 2 inch mark and wrapped the yarn between them.
I did not look at any other tutorials when I did this and I now realize that I probably should have wrapped the yarn all the way around the frame to the other side and back again. But I still made it work this way.
3. Cut about 2 inch strips of fabric from t-shirts, you will need a lot of them!
I grabbed some t-shirts from the thrift store in the colors that I wanted.
4. Tie the strips together and trim off the edges to make a really long strand of material.
This is totally trial and error, you can tie on more as you are weaving too. It’s hard to gauge how much of each color you will need until you are actually in the midst of weaving your strips.
5. Tie the very first strip onto the first strand of yarn and start weaving in and out.
I waited until the end of a row every time I wanted to change colors. Just tie on the new color and trim of any excess. Push up your rows as you weave to make sure everything is tight.
You will see that my weaving pulled in the middle and was wider at the top and bottom. I think if I would have wrapped the yarn in a different way like I had discussed earlier, this wouldn’t have happened.
6. When you are finished, simply cut the yarn and tie them together.
Since my weaving ended up being a little uneven with the tops and bottom being wider, I actually ended up sewing along the edges and trimming it to make it more straight. Again, this was all just trial and error~
7. Next it was time to make some tassels! Get some more white yarn and made some big loops.
8. Cut one end of the loops.
9. Feed the loops through the BACK of the weaving, push the cut end through the loops and pull tight.
Do this as many times as you’d like depending on how many tassels you want.
I did a few different layers of tassels along the bottom and some small sections throughout the top. I also threaded a branch through the top as a cute way to hang it.
9. Trim your tassels and you are ready to hang!
I love this mainly because I was able to make it with stuff I already had on hand and kids can easily do this project themselves!
I can’t wait to show you how this little guy looks in the rest of the girls’ room! I think it’s my favorite room makeover ever, so stay tuned!
