If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that we are in the process of totally making over our basement room into my 2 oldest daughters’ shared bedroom. I’m thrilled to say that it’s nearly complete and I can’t wait to share the full reveal with you soon! I wanted to make some DIY Wall Decor for an awkward spot by their bed and decided to try my hand at making a woven wall hanging. My secret to this one: old T-shirts! Yep, I just cut up a bunch of tees and made a loom and went for it. I think the end product is pretty cute, so read on to see how to make some of your own DIY wall decor for that spot in your home that’s feeling a little empty.
DIY Wall Decor: T-Shirt Weaving
Here’s what you will need:
- Picture Frame
- Sewing Machine
First, I grabbed an old picture frame and marked off every 2 inches on the top and bottom.
I placed thumbtacks at each 2 inch mark and wrapped the yarn between them. I did not look at any other tutorials when I did this and I now realize that I probably should have wrapped the yarn all the way around the frame to the other side and back again. But I still made it work this way.
Tie the strips together and trim off the edges to make a really long strand of material. This is totally trial and error, you can tie on more as you are weaving too. It’s hard to gauge how much of each color you will need until you are actually in the midst of weaving your strips.
You will see that my weaving pulled in the middle and was wider at the top and bottom. I think if I would have wrapped the yarn in a different way like I had discussed earlier, this wouldn’t have happened.
Since my weaving ended up being a little uneven with the tops and bottom being wider, I actually ended up sewing along the edges and trimming it to make it more straight. Again, this was all just trial and error~
