I recently made over a little nook near our front door for hanging coats and stashing backpacks. I wanted to whip up some DIY wall art and was inspired by my geometric planters from a few years ago. I saw some gold shapes at Hobby Lobby awhile back and decided to try making my own using straws. I think they turned out pretty cute and would be fun for a kids room or even painted in different colors for some party decor!
Here’s what you will need:
- air dry clay
- spray paint
Begin by cutting up your straws and laying them out in the geometric shape that you want. I am pretty much the least mathematically minded person in the world, so I didn’t attempt to make mine perfectly symmetrical. I just experimented around with the straws until I liked how it looked.
Thread the wire through the straws and twist to connect them. This doesn’t need to look pretty, we will fix that later!
Once they are all connected bend the straws until it “pop” out a little and makes a 3-dimensional shape.
Now, to cover up those ugly wire connections, form some air dry clay into balls and form them around all of the junctions.
After the clay is dry, give everything a good coat of spray paint! These would look cool in white, black, colors…anything!
For a short term hanging solution, you can hang these with double sided tape since they are so light. But if you are wanting these on the wall long term, you could hang them on tiny nails. Enjoy your straw creations!!
