I decided to try my hand at marbling some dish towels. I’ve already done some marbled pumpkins for fall and thought it was time to try again with a different method. I also love using inexpensive dish towels for craft projects. My child’s drawing embroidered dish towels are such a big hit! Marbling ended up being so easy and I can’t wait to experiment with more color combinations!
I have seen this method of marble dying fabric with shaving cream and thought that sounded just crazy enough to try. Here’s what you will need to make your own:
Marbled Dish Towels
Shaving Cream
Fabric Paint
Flour Sack Dish Towels
Trash Bags
Toothpick
Squirt out a bunch of shaving cream into a large pan (or directly onto a trash bag if you are dyeing a large piece of fabric)
Dot some fabric paint onto the shaving cream. I found that using different shades of the same color work best.
Using a toothpick (or the handle of a paintbrush in my case), swirl the colors together.
Lay your dish cloth on top of the shaving cream and press lightly.
Lift up and you will start to see the marbled effect.
Using the back of a large knife, or any other straight metal object, scrape off the shaving cream.
Now, I ended up not loving the black and I also didn’t choose a large enough pan. So I did it again by using lighter colors and putting the shaving cream on a larger surface to dye the entire dish cloth. When you are finished scraping, heat set the paint after it is dry by laying a cloth on top of the dish cloth and ironing. Then you can wash it as normal.
I made one with blues and another one with blues and grays.
