DIY Canvas Art For Kids

I’ve been searching for an art project for my kids that I can hang in their room. This winter, we moved the girls into not only the same room, but the same bed. They now share a full size bed and absolutely love it.  The transition to move Jane out of crib into not just a bed, but a bed shared with her sister went smoother than planned.  (Although, shortly after the move, she was jumping on the bed after lights out, which resulted in her breaking both bones in her left arm…but that’s another story for another day.) Anyway, I’ve been wanting to hang a fun art project above their bed but have been so indecisive.  I was going to hang letters, but then decided it would be fun for the girls to create something themselves to hang above their heads.  So, this is what we came up with!

Materials Needed For DIY Canvas Art For Kids

  • Canvases
  • Masking Tape or Painters Tape
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brushes

Instructions For How To Make Canvas Art For Kids

1. Use Masking tape to mark off a letter.

I found 2 canvases for 1/2 price at Michaels and snagged them up.  Then, I used masking tape to mask out an “L” for Lula and a “J” for Jane.  I was a little worried it might not work, but I couldn’t find any painters tape at home and just went for it with the masking tape…which ended up being fine!

2. Next, have your child paint over the canvas with acrylic paint.

Next, I got out some acrylic paint and large paint brushes for the girls.  Here are some tips to help out your kid turn that canvas into something pretty and not a brown mess.  Give them only ONE COLOR at a time.  For the first color, I chose pink and mixed it with some water so that they would end up covering most of the canvas with it.

Another tip is to keep rotating the canvas for them.  Kids tend to paint in just one spot and not cover the whole surface.  By turning it every few minutes, they will cover more.  When, I was ready for the next color, I actually dried their canvases for a few minutes with a hair dryer.  This keeps them from just over mixing and creating brown. I dried the canvas a bit after each color until we were done!

You can experiment with mixing some paint with water and using large brushes and keeping other colors of paint thick with small brushes. This will create a more varied effect.

Just have them paint all over the canvas, masking tape and all! Encourage them to make shapes and lines. It’s ok to guide or direct your child when making art, this will help them be more successful! And it will prevent you from being tempted just to grab their brush and do it for them.

3. Peel off the tape before it’s dry and then it dry completely.

And you are done with your adorable art project!
