So, I’ve never shown a picture of my kitchen because it’s embarrassing. We’ve lived here for 3 years with the hideousness and have finally saved up enough to do something about it. Here is the kitchen when we moved in. Shocking, right? So ugly.
This was our quick fix to make it liveable. We painted the walls and cabinets and replaced all the hardware and put in hardwood floors. It’s been liveable for the past 3 years.
But those ancient appliances…
And disgusting countertops HAVE to go!
So…here is what was happening over the weekend.
Goodbye ugly oven!
And hello new stainless steel oven and dishwasher! We also had to replace the bottom cabinet with a smaller one to make all the new stuff fit.
Our next project is to install the new stainless steel microwave above the oven. Part of the cabinet will have to be taken out, so it will be quite the project! We also had to take off the counter tops on the right side of the stove. We’ve been fearing the counter top removal process and were super excited when it just popped off in about 2 minutes!
On the opposite side of the kitchen, we used to have this little desk area that was never used. It was wasted space. (I forgot to snap a picture prior to the removal process)
But now we have taken it out and replaced it with more cabinets. We will extend the new counters, so we will have more space! The ancient speaker system (yes, it still works, but why would you need one in a 1600 sq ft house??) will also be going away.
This is the plan for the new and improved kitchen:
We have already purchased a new brushed nickel pull down faucet and a large black granite kitchen sink. The new counters will be granite in the color Kashmir White. I’m hoping to do white subway tile all around with gray grout. And I tried to recreate our kitchen wall color above, but we will keep it for now and then may re-paint after everything is finished.
We scored our appliances super cheap and I got a discount on the granite through my job (it actually is cheaper for us to do granite than Corian, which was our first plan). It took time researching appliances, but it was worth it. We saved about $1000 just by taking time to do our homework on deals and pricing (and LOTS of time looking on Craigslist). I will do a budget breakdown when the kitchen is totally done!
It’s not fun having a half destroyed kitchen, but I can live with it for a month because I’m so excited for what’s to come! It’s definitely worth the wait!
