Indoor Activities Day 7: Texture Rubbings

For day 7 of my 31 days of indoor activitites project, I'm doing an oldie but a goodie. I did so many variations of this as an art teacher and it's perfect for preschoolers in learning about textures, shapes and even fine motor skills.

First, find some old and broken crayons and take the paper off.

Gather some scrap paper and some objects with different textures.  Have your child feel each object and talk about how each one feels.   We had things that were bumpy, sharp, smooth, lumpy...etc.  Put the paper on top of the object and show your child how to hold it sideways and rub the crayon over the texture.

Sometimes it takes them a few times to remember to hold their crayon sideways, not vertical

Let your child walk around the house and find things with different textures to make rubbings.

It's so fun for them to hunt down toys and and objects and look at them in a different way.  I loved the words that Lula was using to describe different textures.  "Curly" was my favorite adjective she used.

Hope you have a fun filled weekend! As I said in my rules, I won't be posting on Sundays this month.

I will be back Monday with some new indoor activities and a really awesome giveaway!!
