We are on Day 3 of my 30 Days of Repurposing project.
We are going to dye an old pair of worn out TOMS shoes. The results are not dramatic, but it worked and was worth doing in my case!
Here are my gray TOMS before:
The reason why I’ve been wanting to do this, is because right after I purchased these shoes, I somehow got bleach spots all over them. They also quickly became worn and faded.
The first thing I did was get a package of RIT dye in pearl gray. This is the same color and brand that I used to dye my closet curtains and so I knew I’d like the color!
I knew that I didn’t want the little TOMS logo tags to be dyed gray since they are originally white. I also wanted to try to keep the inside and sole from being dyed. My solution was to cover everything that I didn’t want dyed with painters tape, followed by packing tape.
I made sure to cover the little tags well
Next, I dissolved the dye in a 5 gallon bucket.
Threw in the shoes and stirred them around with some tongs so that my hands didn’t get any dye on them
After only about 8 minutes I could tell the shoes were getting pretty dark gray, so I went ahead and took them out and rinsed them off. (the package directions say to let it sit for 30 minutes, but I knew they’d be way too dark if I did that)
After they dried off, the bleach spots were mostly gone and they just looked a little more refreshed and a shade darker
The tag stayed white!
Definitely not dramatic results, but I wasn’t looking for dramatic in this case. If you are feeling super gutsy, you could definitely buy some white TOMS and dye them any color you wish with this method!
Maybe you are just dying for some bright orange or dark teal TOMS — I say go for it!
Has anyone else had shoe dyeing success?
