Repurposing Day 14: Waterproof Pocket Bib

I'm excited about Day 14 of 30 Days of Repurpsing.  I'm almost halfway there!

Today, I will be sharing a tutorial on how to repurpose a reusable shopping bag into a waterproof pocket bib

I found this $0.99 shopping bag at Marshalls and thought it was so adorable.  I've seen similar ones at Joann's and Hobby Lobby for very cheap.  The material is perfect to make something waterproof.

And you can't beat the price! Especially considering the fact that most waterproof fabrics like oil cloth are super expensive.

First, I took a bib I already had and made a pattern by tracing it.  I cut another piece the same size and shape of the bottom portion of the bib, which will be the pocket

Use your pattern to cut out the pieces from the bag.

Next, you will need some double fold bias tape.  I actually made mine, but you could definitely buy some if you wanted to.  Sew the bias tape along the top edge of the pocket

Pin the pocket to the bib and now pin bias tape all around the edge of the bib and sew on.

Lastly, sew on some velcro for an easy closure

And you are done! So simple!

The fabric is a bit tricky to work with, but it's totally doable.  You just have to coax it a bit.  Also, I know I'm kind of "cheating" with this one because I didn't use something old, but I figured for $1, it can still count!

Linking up with these great parties!

  6. Wow! I'm totally impressed...that's just plain genius! I never thought to use one of those bags for a waterproof project, but I always love the patterns of them even though the last thing I need is another bag! You did a great job. And those waterproof bibs are the best! Would you share here?

  12. Such cute fabric!!

You can also use a heavy duty shower curtain. They go on
Clearance for $4 at target and you can make about 15 out of one
curtain. Your little one is adorable;). Happy day

  13. If I cut the "pocket" larger at the top will it stick out a little more to catch liquids more easily? When the pocket lays so flat it really does not catch well. What do you think?

  14. yes, that would definitely work to cut the pocket a bit bigger. This was the first time I attempted a pocket and that makes sense. The bib also would work well without a pocket!

  15. BE CAREFUUL AND READ THE ARTI CLE…
SOME OF THOSE BAGS may contain a harmful amount of LEAD !!!!…. it’s in the paint they use to get those colorful bags…

  16. thanks anoushka for the article. It's a good caution. I have already researched it and it seems like it's mainly CVS bags made in China because the paint flakes off. For this project, I'm using a Marshalls bag and I did go to their website and I don't think there are any lead issues and the paint has never flaked off. You can never be too careful, though! I hadn't thought about lead when I came up with the idea!
