Today's post will be about meat that I bought. Aren't you all on the edges of your seat? This is going to be amazing.
But, seriously...I did buy some meat. And I'm actually reaaalllly excited about it. I know I'm weird for this reason, but I still had to share it on my blog even though I know the people reading this might not share my enthusiasm.
After lots of research (and convincing my husband), we decided to join a meat CSA. We ordered a half share from a local farm that produces organic, free range, natural meats. We particularly have been wanting to make the switch to grass fed beef, but it's soooo expensive to buy! Once we did a little digging, we realized that joining a CSA is the way to go to get grass fed, organic, high quality meat for much cheaper.
We decided to go with Parker farms in Richmond, MO. (just outside of Kansas City) They have 4 drop off locations in the city, so you don't have to drive all the way to the farm every month! Since we are only doing a half share, we get our meat the first saturday of the month. If you do a whole share, you get it twice a month.
We picked up our first order on Saturday. This is what we got!
When you buy a share (or 1/2 share), you are getting beef, lamb, pork, chicken and eggs. They just put together a random assortment of cuts for you...you never know what you will get.
We figure that while this is a little more expensive than buying meat at the grocery store, it's much cheaper than trying to get the same quality of meat from Whole Foods or another health food chain. Actually, what this costs a month is about what we've spend monthly on meat in the past, but it's just a smaller amount than what we've been buying. I think I can make this last for the month without having to buy additional meat. We'll see!!
We have yet to try any of it...
Except I did eat an egg
Aren't they pretty?
Can't wait to eat the rest!

The title to this post made me giggle! My husband was raised on a farm, and so was a big rare-steak eating carnivore until his brother decided to try vegetarianism for a year and gave us some info about the meat we buy in the stores - pretty scary. So we were/are kind of in the same boat as you. The vegetarian thing isn't for us (though we have cut back) but organic is crazy expensive. I need to look into doing this! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteyes, soooo expensive! good luck, I hope you can find a CSA near you!
ReplyDeletethat's a good point, I didn't think about that! although, they do recycle the egg cartons and reuse them, so I guess that makes it better. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but it kills me when people are all "organic, free-range, grass fed".... and then use STYROFOAM packaging. Other than that, looks great!
ReplyDeleteAfter our MOPS meeting yesterday, I came looking for this post on your blog. Definitely going to try and convince Andrew that we should join the Parker Farms CSA, too. How's it working out for your family so far?
ReplyDeleteBekah, you guys should totally do it! We are loving it. The half share is the perfect amount for us and I haven't had to buy any additional meet from the store since we started (I do have to buy more eggs since we only get 1 dozen a month). It it a big upfront investment, but I think it's actually going to save us money in the long run, plus the meat is really high quality (an all grass-fed of course). There are several different pick up locations around the city, the closest one to us and probably you guys is 75th and Metcalf on the first Saturday of each month.
