A Colorful Celebration

We celebrated miss Jane's first birthday with a little party for friends and family.

I wanted it to be a fun and low key way to celebrate Jane's first year of life.

I had seen some cake ideas on Pinterest, to add a little bunting on the top.  So, I sewed some rainbow triangles to some bias tape and tied it to some bamboo skewers.

I decided to make everything super colorful for the party and not stick with one particular theme.

I whipped together some cupcakes for the chocolate lovers:

Colorful fruit skewers

Rainbow sprinkled dipped pretzels

And I took down Jane's fabric flags that were hanging from her room and added them to the table along with her monthly pictures that I just pinned on with clothespins

Oh yes, and the cake had another colorful surprise element.  I saw this cake on pinterest and just knew I had to try it...

Here's what it looks like after we cut into it...

Yes, a 6 layer rainbow cake!   I just used 2 box cake mixes and divided the batter evenly into 6 bowls.  Then, I added food coloring to each bowl and baked each layer separately.

I followed the advice from a blog I read somewhere (can't find it at the moment, sorry!) make layers of frosting on wax paper and freeze it.  It made it so much easier to assemble this way! The outside and top were very "crummy" and definitely didn't look perfect, but I don't claim to be a professional.

I just made vanilla buttercream frosting...you need a lot!

I also made a little bunting shirt for Jane-I will post a tutorial on this soon.  It took me no time at all to make it (along with the headband)

Lula was equally excited about all the delicious sugary goodness

And Jane performed beautifully when it was cake eating time!

here it comes...

I think she liked it. She ate every bite.

And we managed to get one shot of her in her birthday crown (thanks again aunt Kodie!)

All gone!

Can't wait to see what year #2 holds for little miss Janie Sue!

Thanks to Donna for the great pictures!
